FOREWORD

Prof Anthony Kemp reading for John Griffin.jpeg

Michael created his own website several years ago. It was his strong desire to make his scholarship available to as wide a global audience as possible. This was not from some egotistical desire on his part, but borne out of his love of his subject, and his frustration with conventional publishing taking so long to bear fruit.

His first website was hosted by Godaddy.  His wife informed Godaddy of the death of her husband, but without contacting her they disposed of Michael’s website in May 2022, incurring the loss of all he had created.

His wife has set about creating a new website with a different provider. She is deeply indebted to Scott Curran in assisting her to re-create it.

It is now impossible to know whether Michael would have selected these writings to appear in this way. Those who knew and loved Michael would affirm his generosity as a scholar, a lecturer, a friend, and a colleague. His output was prodigious, and he was still writing until about six weeks before he died.

Some of what is here is very much a work-in-progress.   For example, Michael had been working on one book for some thirty years. There are unfinished chapters which may have been published at some future time. Michael was still working on this book when he became ill with the cancer, that eventually took his life. The contents list is published, and you will see that he was exploring a series of binaries.

All we ask of you, who search his works, displayed on this site, is that you appreciate the depth of his knowledge, his erudition, his generosity in making this available;  and with that said, that he is always referenced if you want to quote from him. To do otherwise is intellectual theft. Please honour his memory and his legacy with total honesty and transparency.

Thank you.
